Initial set up of a SolusVM Windows VPS

Several things need to be done after receiving your new Windows VPS. You can first access this via the solusVM panel. This will be on the :5353 port in your welcome mail. Use the VNC viewer to bring up a console to the VPS and you should see it sitting in a mini-setup stage. Follow through with this and set your Administrator password.

After the desktop loads the next thing you should do would be enable RDP. To do this first click Start and then right click My Computer and select Properties. Look for the Remote tab and select this. About halfway down the page you will see a box to check that will enable remote connections. Select this and click apply/OK. In Windows 2008 this should automatically create and exception in the Windows Firewall. In 2003 you will need to do so manually.

Click Start >> Control Panel and then select Windows Firewall. You should see an Exceptions tab. Select this and then click the box for Remote Desktop and click OK.

Finally, the IP should be set to static and the secondary IP should be added.

Click Start >> Control Panel >> Network Connections >> Local Area Connection. In the window that opens click the Properties button then highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select Properties to open the correct window.

This is where you set your IP to static as opposed to DHCP. You would also set the preferred and alternate DNS in this Window. If you require information concerning the netmask and gateway please do ask in your ticket.

Finally, to add the secondary IP to the server, click the Advanced button to open the Advanced TCP/IP settings window. Use the Add button which will ask you for the IP address {next consecutive IP in most cases} and the subnet mask which will be the same as the one entered in the previous window.

Be sure to use Apply and then OK when closing all the windows after this process to make sure the newly applied settings are saved.
